Common problem with callbacks are parameters. You might have specified your callback but need to pass an extra parameter. The easiest way to achieve this is to wrap the callback inside another function:
// get some data
var foobar = …;

// specify handler, it needs data as a parameter
function handler(data) {
//…
}

// add click handler and pass foobar!
$(‘a’).

Technologies are based on the type of application you intended to develop.
Mostly web applications use PHP as best choice including Digg, Wikipedia & more.
Some frameworks i would suggest.
* Kohana – php framework
* Cakephp – php framework
* N.framework – php Social media framework – http://ndottech.

Comparision elgg & others
Elgg is more reliable, having lots of plugin functionalities. They are providing API plugins to add functions / modules into it. i feel that is their greatest value added thing.
Other than that, elgg is fine, but compare with some other opensource platform they dont have more services.
If you are looking for a readymade services, elgg is not a good choice.
